Young entrepreneurs in the Netherlands
A growing number of young people have started setting up their own businesses. There is no age minimum for starting a business. Nowadays, more and more children see opportunities from a young age (ondernemingsplannen.nl, n.d.). In 2019, over 6500 children registered with the Dutch chamber of commerce. Compared to the previous year, this was an increase of 70 percent, (KvK, 2020). About 4/5th of the young entrepreneurs are boys. The children need to get permission from their parents. However, they do have to act according to the rules adults have to comply with as well.
Knowledge
A reason for the quick surge in the number of young entrepreneurs could be that children already know about computers and social media. They are growing up with the media, and some define a niche market and try to fill it. It does not come as a surprise that most young entrepreneurs start their own online shops (Ondernemen & Internet, 2021).
Ben Woldring
Some young Dutch entrepreneurs make a nice living; to others, it's only some extra pocket money, just like adult entrepreneurs. However, some of the kids have great ideas and are ambitious. One of them is Ben Woldring. Ben started a company when he was only 13 years old. For a school assignment, he created a website that compared phone providers. The way he earned money was by showing advertisements on his website. Nowadays, Woldring has made millions of euros and has a big internet company called; Bencom Group (ondernemingsplannen.nl, n.d.).
EvanTube
Another example is Evan, who started when he was only eight years old reviewing toys on his YouTube channel, EvanTube. His father helps him with the business. EvanTube has over 2 million followers, and he makes roughly 1.3 million dollars a year. These profits are made due to advertisements by toy companies (ondernemingsplannen.nl, n.d.).
